From the Sonic the Hedgehog video games and TV series. In the video game, Sonic Unleashed, Dr. Eggman removed the power from Super Sonic using a machine that sucked out the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Dr. Eggman uses the power to release an energy from a creature called Dark Gaia.  This energy gets absorbed into Sonic's body which will enable him to turn into a Werehog. Sonic can only be affected by Dark Gaia's power at night, which is when Sonic turns into the werewolf like form which gives him werewolf behavior, like howling and running at higher speeds on all fours.

Made of a polyester fiber material. The eye, nose and mouth area is made of a vinyl -like material.
